Quote I love: Ice Cream & Equal Rights

Once a week, I post a quote that I’ve read/heard recently. So here’s this week’s Quote I love …

hubbyhubby_2d_a1In celebration of Vermont’s legalization on marriage for gay and lesbian couples, Ben & Jerry’s is renaming a legendary flavor.

“At the core of Ben & Jerry’s values, we believe that social justice can and should be something that every human being is entitled to…. From the very beginning of our 30 year history, we have supported equal rights for all people. The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction and something worth celebrating with peace, love and plenty of ice cream.”

Walt Freese
Chief Executive Officer of Ben & Jerry’s

I’m all for ice cream. And equal rights.

What do you think of Ben & Jerry’s efforts? Comment or send me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

Video I love: That’s Gay – Commercials

Once a week, I post a video I’ve seen recently that I’m loving. So here’s this week’s Video I love …

A  light look at a real absence of gay imagery on TV and some sad commercials that make being gay something gross.

I must admit, though, I do like watching the gay commercials on LOGO. It is nice to feel included in society, even if it is on a channel watched mostly by those in the know.

So tell me, what do you think? Do you wish there were more commercials featuring gay men and women? What types of content would make for positive LGBT images? Comment or send me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

Quote I love: The right to marry

“The right to marry is about us, it is not about you, any more than the fight for integration was about white people, or a women’s right to vote was about men. It is only about you to the extent that you have to live with yourself knowing that you are depriving a significant portion of the population their basic civil rights.”

My partner and I live in the Midwest so this was a huge deal for us. Thanks to the Iowa Supreme Court and congrats to all the LGBT community members living in Iowa!

Quote I love: Jennifer Beals on gay marriage

I came across this quote today. I like the way it was worded. There are so many people that live without love, yet they long for it. I don’t get how strangers can judge me and Rosie for finding what many strive for. I treasure every day I have with her.

“I’m always shocked that gay marriage is such a big deal. You have to realize how precious human life is, when there are tsunamis and mudslides, when there are armies and terrorists – at any moment, you could be gone, and potentially in the most brutal fashion. And then you have to realize that love is truly one of the most extraordinary things you can experience in your life. To begrudge someone else their love of another person because of gender seems to be absolutely absurd. It’s based in fear, fear of the other, fear of what is not like you. But when you are able to see lives on a day-to-day basis, rather than reducing it to politics, then it humanizes a whole community of people that were otherwise invisible.”
