Stolen Book Returned After 60 Years

Once a week, I post about something I’m loving (tv, movies, books, art, photos, romances, authors, or anything else) that I’ve seen or read about recently. So here is this week’s For the Love of …

I’m loving this article about a library book returned sixty some years after it was taken off a shelf without being checked out. Talk about guilt and undoing past transgressions!

The 707-page biography of Napoleon Bonaparte was “stolen” 1n 1949 from a library in Toledo, Ohio.

Jump to the present. The patron wrote a letter stating, “Carrying guilt for 60 years is a terrible thing,” and mailed the note along with the book from California to Ohio. The patron also said, “I removed this book from your stacks in 1949 and did not check it out. I apologize. It’s an excellent book and in good condition.” — Quoted from: ToledoBlade.com

I think this is kinda cool. Granted, the person returned the book anonymously, but really, it’s a rare person who would return it at all. Most people would have tossed it out years ago. It’s not like late fees were stacking up anywhere. The library didn’t even know who had it. You have to respect someone who tries to fix their mistakes as best as they can. Especially sixty years later.

So what’s the longest you’ve ever had a library book? And did you return it?

Mine was probably over a year. And yes, I returned it. My mom was the librarian, so…no late fees! Yay!

Hope you have a great day!

The growing acceptance of ebooks

Once a week, I post about something I’m loving (tv, movies, books, art, photos, romances, authors, or anything else) that I’ve seen or read about recently. So here is this week’s For the love of …

This week, I loved this article What’s Hot in Romance? E-books, Baby! by Lori James, the COO of All Romance Ebooks, LLC. It talks about the trends in romance ebooks.

Here’s some of what she had to say…

“Romance is also about werewolves falling in love with girls. Sometimes it’s about two or more boys falling in love with a girl. It’s even about boys falling in love with boys. Formulaic is out. Edgy is in.”

“In 2009 we saw a 22% decline in straight contemporary. What were the niche sub-genres in which we saw a significant increase? Rubenesque (i.e. stories that feature women with curves), Paranormal, Werewolves and Gay Fiction—and the hotter the better. At least in terms of sales.”

I also believe we are seeing more acceptance of all kinds of love stories, and I like that. I like that, as a reader and a writer, my favorite types of books are doing well. I like that ebooks are selling well. I like to hear that more and more people are reading, and I think the convenience of having tons of books at your fingertips wherever you are (waiting at the doctor’s office, riding on the bus, waiting for your kid’s practice to end), means that people have more time to read during their busy schedules. No more lugging around a print book or being stuck without something to read because you finished the one book you had tucked in your purse. My PDA has hundreds of books loaded on it. Call it an addiction, but I love the hours of reading that affords me, the choices that offers me.

I still love print books, and I still buy my favorite books in print if I can. But I also love the convenience of buying ebooks. I love that in a matter of a couple clicks of the mouse, I have a new love story to read.

So do you read ebooks? What genres do you read? Comment or send me an email. I’d love to hear about your reading habits.

Donate a blog post day: Matthew Shepard Foundation

No regular post today. Instead, I’m donating my blog post to a non-profit organization — one that I think is worthy of attention from anyone interested in making the world a better place. So here’s my pick for “donate a blog post day.” Please take a look.

This week here in the US, we are celebrating Thanksgiving. I thought it was the perfect time to create a new section of my blog titled “Donate a blog post day.” I’ll be posting these occasionally throughout the year. So here’s my first selection…

The Matthew Shepard Foundation
Seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied educational, outreach and advocacy programs and by continuing to tell Matthew’s story.

Even after all this time, I still can’t watch or read about Matthew and not cry. If you’ve never seen the video from the foundation’s site, take a look below. And also, please take a moment to think about what you can do in memory of Matthew. I know not all of us have a lot of money to spare, but you can help in small ways. How about sending out a tweet with a link to the foundation’s site so that others never forget the tragedy of what can happen to people like Matthew? Or adding a link on your website or blog to help spread the foundation’s message? Find out how to get a banner ad for your site here.

Thanks for taking a minute to read about this important organization. It’s people like you who care who will help make a difference.

Have a great day!

For the love of: Gus and Waldo

Once a week, I post about something I’m loving (tv, movies, books, art, photos, romances, authors, or anything else) that I’ve seen or read about recently. So here is this week’s For the love of …

GusWaldoLogo GusAndWaldo

Today I’m loving Gus and Waldo, two gay penguins in a monogamous relationship. They are silly but cute enough to make me smile.

If you haven’t seen them before, check out their site at: www.gusandwaldo.com. They have books, T-shirts, and a video on YouTube that is adorable with a sexy way to deal with spiders. I haven’t read the books (just seen the previews on their site), but the YouTube video is fun.

A Big Surprise for an Ohio Soup Kitchen

Once a week I post about something I’m loving (tv, movies, books, art, photos, romances, authors, or anything else) that I’ve seen or read about recently. So here’s this week’s For the love of …

Thanks to author AJ Llewellyn’s tweet this morning, I read this article and I’m loving it.

Rachael Ray Makes Thanksgiving Brighter for Ohio Soup Kitchen

I’m from Ohio and many people I know are unemployed so this had special meaning for me.

It’s a neat story about Rachel Ray and Sara Lee doing some good. Yeah, they get some PR from it, but it’s still an awesome thing for Ray to give of her time to help feed people. I’m always complaining about not having enough time for everything I want to do, and let’s face it, I’m not Rachel Ray. If she can find the time to help others,  I should be able to as well.

Cheers,
Sloan Parker
